Shirley Strother Newman

Shirley L. Strother Newman, 90, of Strasburg, VA, peacefully transitioned from this life On November 11, 2025, at Winchester Medical Center surrounded by the love of her family.

Shirley was born in Strasburg, VA on June 7, 1935, daughter of the late Frederick D. Smith and Lillian V. Hall of Virginia. She was a graduate of Douglas High School in Winchester, VA.  In August 1978, Shirley was united in marriage to the late Louis J. Newman. Together, they shared a life marked by faith, partnership, and an unshakable love for family and community.  Shirley’s life was one of purpose and service. She dedicated many years as a loyal and faithful employee of First Bank in Strasburg, VA.  Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her compassion, humor, and unwavering faith touched countless lives. She was a proud member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, pastored by Pastor Patti Brown, where she served faithfully and lived out her deep belief in caring for others.

She leaves to cherish her memory four children, daughters Lillian J. Thomas (Lee), Betty K. Strother of Strasburg, son Lawrence A. Strother (Alma)  of North Charleston, SC, and Terry A. Warner of Strasburg along with the treasured memory of three late daughters Minnett Strother, Kendria Mitchell and Janet Roberts (Carroll), all of Strasburg. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Dorothy Braxton of Woodstock, VA, and her best friend Nina Nickens of Strasburg  along with a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

A celebration of life and homegoing service for Shirley will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at Stover Funeral Home in Strasburg, VA.  Mrs. Newman will be laid to rest by her late husband in Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery.
