Samuel Benjamin Murphy, a resident of Maurertown, VA passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. He was 85 years young. To honor and respect the wishes of Mr. Murphy, A small family only memorial will be held privately by his family to celebrate his life. Mr. Murphy declined to have military honors conducted stating, "I'm no hero. I only served." Mr. Murphy was born in Johnstown, PA on December 27, 1932 a son of the late Paul and Dorothy Murphy. Mr. Murphy joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served eight years at sea. He was then transferred to the U.S. Army where he served another four years, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. He lived for many years in Clymer, PA and then relocated to VA where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Strasburg, VA for thirteen years retiring at the age of 65. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Erin Koppell, four brothers and one sister. Survivors include his loving wife, Carol Murphy of Maurertown, VA; his beloved daughter Kathy Funk and husband Kenneth of Toms Brook, VA along with 5 grandchildren and one sister, Betty Berglund of Jamestown, NY. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to Grace Baptist Church, 1155 Hoover Road, Woodstock, VA 22664.
