Romeo Copp Stickley, age 94 of Middletown passed away Sunday, March 21, 2010 at the V.A. Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV. He was Born February 24, 1916 in Reliance, Virginia a son of the late Clarence and Lucy Hensell Stickley. A funeral service for Mr. Stickley will be conducted at 2:00pm Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Stover Memorial Chapel with Rev. Thomas Keithley officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Middletown. Military honors will be conducted by Shenandoah American Legion Post #77 of Strasburg. Romeo joined the Navy on December 8, 1941. He served as Chief Machinist Mate in the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters on the destroyer escort, S.S. Herbert C. Jones. He was awarded four Bronze Stars for bravery under fire. As a young man, he worked for Fisher's Dairy in Strasburg. He made his living farming and working for the U.S. Postal Service in Middletown from which he retired in 1968. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he served as leader of the Men's Sunday School Class and was a member of the Men's Fellowship. He served on the Middletown Town Council, was past president of the Middletown Lions Club, and was honored as Middletown Citizen of the Year. He was a lifetime member of the Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 of Strasburg. An avid gardener who enjoyed nothing more than sharing the fruits of his labor with family, friends, and neighbors, Mr. Stickley was a friend to all. Residents of Middletown knew him, if not by name, by wave of hand as they traveled down Church Street. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years Evelyn Whitney Stickley, eldest daughter Judith S. Belford, second wife Della "Jane" Branner Stickley, brother Coulter Stickley, and sisters Maxine S. Orndoff and Coreen S. Miller. He is survived by his children David B. Stickley of Middletown, Rebecca S. Stickley of Danville, Bonnie S. Orndorff of Winchester, and Michael W. Stickley of Middletown; 5 grandchildren-Julia Jenkins of Branchville, SC, Amy Rhodes of Clear Brook, Brian Stickley of Stephens City, Kathryn Orndorff of Winchester, Tara Stickley of Middletown and 5 great-grandchildren - Whitney Wisecarver of Charleston, SC, Tori Dalton of Branchville, SC, Timmy and Tyler Rhodes of Clear Brook, and Kayleigh Stickley Fisher of Stephens City. Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Belford, Robert Belford, Ronald Stickley, Winston Hensell, and Vernon Hensell. The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home from 6-8pm Tuesday evening.
