Richard S. Hammersley, Jr., age 85, a resident of Woodstock died Sunday, November 24, 2013 at his home. A funeral service for Mr. Hammersley will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Stover Memorial Chapel with Pastor Ken Sparks officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Mr. Hammersley was born on August 1, 1928 in Franconia, Virginia a son of the late Richard Sydney and Helen Cornnell Hammersley. He was a graduate of Mount Vernon High School in Fairfax County, worked as a brick mason for over 50 years and attended Grace Baptist Church in Woodstock. He was a life member of Franconia Volunteer Fire Department in Fairfax County Serving as Chief for 7 years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ann Brill Hammersley. Surviving are his daughter, Gayle A. Hammersley of Toms Brook; two sons, Richard S. Hammersley, III of Fort Valley and Thomas M. Hammersley of Woodstock; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Louise Enzian of Mt. Airy, MD. Pallbearers will be Michael C. Nelson, Joshua M. Hammersley, John T. Hammersley, M. Hunter Nelson, Kyle M. Davie, and Grayson A. Manning. The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home on Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Winchester, VA 22601
