Mary Sue Murdock Snarr

Mary Sue Snarr passed away September 28, 2018 at Greenfield Assisted Living in Woodstock. She was born September 19, 1930 at Harrisonburg Memorial Hospital to Byron Murdock and Ada (Peg) Garber. She was 88 years old.

A devoted wife to Leo Snarr for over 65 years, their wonderful marriage produced six children: Steven S. Snarr (Debora), Thomas T. Snarr (Patty), Karen Snarr Beiler, John J. Snarr (Cheryl), Paige Snarr Skelly (Bob) and Mary Snarr Long (Clay). Mary Sue was a proud grandmother of sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mary Sue graduated from Woodstock High School in 1947 and Madison College (JMU) in 1951 where she majored in business and minored in music. As a homemaker for over 30 years, she ran her household with amazing efficiency and was an excellent cook and baker. While raising her children, she also served as treasurer and part time bookkeeper for Valley Builder Supply, Inc. until its closing. She returned to the workforce when her children left home and became a teller for Bank of America for 4 years until she was appointed Voter Registrar for Shenandoah County where she served for 11 years.

Not only a talented seamstress and knitter, she was a lover of the arts, particularly music. She was a charter member of the Masterworks Chorus serving as Treasurer for sixteen years. A dedicated member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, she served as its Treasurer for over forty years and was a loyal choir member for over sixty years. She also served on the 250th Anniversary of Woodstock Committee and raised money for the American Cancer Society. She was the recipient of many service awards in the community including the 2005 Outstanding Citizen Award presented by the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce.

She is one of the last members of the Murdock family and was preceded in death by her husband. The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home in Strasburg on Thursday, October 11, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. and a celebration of life service will be held at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Woodstock on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.

Burial will be private at Massanutten Cemetery in Woodstock. In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to Emanuel Lutheran Church, 127 E. High Street, Woodstock, VA 22664 or Masterworks Chorus, P.O. Box 752, Woodstock, VA 22664.
