Obituary

L. Stewart Smith 80, a resident of Strasburg, VA passed away Monday, August 13, 2018 at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA. A funeral service for Mr. Smith will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 16, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. William H. Hall officiating. Burial will follow in St. Stephen Cemetery, Strasburg, VA. Military honors will be conducted by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg, VA. Immediately following the interment service a time of food and fellowship will be held for family and friends at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Mr. Smith was born in Shenandoah County, VA on April 22, 1938 a son of the late Frank Samuel and Christine Blanche Link Smith. Mr. Smith was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and retired from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg, VA where he served as a member of the Honor Guard. He was also a member of the Strasburg Moose Lodge 403, Strasburg Spurmont Lodge 98, Strasburg Guard-Camp 1587- Sons of the Confederate Veterans, Strasburg Museum and the Blue Ridge Shriners. He loved gardening and working as a contractor/builder. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Jean Carpenter Smith; a sister and brother in law, Patricia D. and Clayton Shiley. Survivors include his children, James S. Coffinberger and wife Deborah of Manassas, VA, Trica K. Combs of Strasburg, VA; his grandchildren, Justin J. Coffinberger, David L. Coffinberger both of Stephens City, VA and James K. Coffinberger of Manassas, VA; his siblings, Robert F. Smith and wife Ida, Gloria A. Stickley and husband Ralph and David E. Smith and wife Sherand all of Strasburg, VA; several nieces and nephews along with his beloved dog Oscar. Pallbearers will be Gary Kronk, Justin Coffinberger, Kevin Smith, Richard Wilson, Michael Smith and Jalen Doman. The family will receive friends at St. Paul Lutheran Church one hour prior to the service. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
