John Leslie Hockman 68, of Strasburg passed away Wednesday, October1, 2014 at Copper Ridge Residential Care Center in Sykesville, MD. A memorial service for Mr. Hockman will be conducted at a later date at the Suamsville Christian Church. He was born in Winchester, VA on June 18, 1946 son of the late E.W. "Jack" and Helen Saum Hockman. Most of his young life was spent at the family farm south of Strasburg. He attended Strasburg High School where he became a loyal and lifetime supporter of Ram athletic events. Coaches Proctor, French, and Smoot frequently received phone calls from J.L. expressing his pride in SHS victories of their various programs. J.L. attended Woodrow Wilson Rehab Center in Fishersville. In 1966 J.L. went to work in the office of the U.S. Forest Service in Harrisonburg, VA where he worked for 30 years. As a part of his job with the Forest Service he would wear and portray the mascot "Smokey Bear" at various events in the Harrisonburg area. While living in Harrisonburg he roomed at Mrs. John O. Marsh's home. While living in the "burg" he developed a love for athletic events at JMU. He was an ardent and knowledgeable fan of VT, UVA, and the Washington Redskins. J.L. was a member of Woodstock Christian Church. J.L. was survived by his sister, Dee and first cousins, Rebecca Feller, Brenda Hunt, Fred Feller, and Diane Hushman, and their families, plus numerous friends.
