Joel A Burgess Jr., age 96, was promoted to heaven on November 8, 2021, at the home of his daughter in Birmingham, AL. He was born in Baltimore, MD on December 15, 1924, and resided in Middletown, VA for 66 years.
A graveside service with military honors for Mr. Burgess will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 19, 2021, at the Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper, VA. A memorial service will follow at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Winchester, VA, at 2:30 p.m. open to friends and acquaintances.
Mr. Burgess was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving his country from 1942-1945 aboard the USS Tingy where he was a machinist mate. He was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Winchester, VA. “I am with Him because of Calvary, His death, burial, resurrection and shed blood”.
Mr. Burgess is survived by his three children and their spouses, Elaine & Raymond Stump, Brad Burgess, and Sue & Mick Vigneulle; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janette Burgess, his second wife, Velma Burgess, and a grandson, Andrew Vigneulle.
