Jackie "Jack" Dean Tolbert of Strasburg Virginia, passed away Monday morning January 4th at 11:38am at Winchester Medical Center at the age of 67. Jack was born in Appomattox, Virginia to the late Emmitt Tolbert and Mazie Goin August 21st, 1942. At the age of 16 Jack began working with Carl D Smith pipeline, where he traveled with the company many places and met his wife. Jack married Shirley Jenkins September, 29th 1960 in Appomattox, Virginia. Jack and Shirley resided in Strasburg, Virginia. Jack founded and owned Jack's Drilling Inc. He was affiliated with The Teamsters Local 639. Jack worked with the Strasburg Police Department, Woodstock Police Department, and Shenandoah County Sherriff's Department to provide hospitality to transients in the valley. Over the course of Jack's life, him and his wife provided shelter and care for hundreds of people in need. Jack was also active with the church and a faithful member of God's Place. Jack is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Shirley; his daughters Sheila Brown and her husband Ronnie; Tasha Tolbert, all of Strasburg; Donna Lowell and her husband Doug, of Stephens City; and his son Matthew and of Strasburg. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Joshua Shell and his wife Cathy, Melissa Brown, Katelynn Brown, Jailyn Tolbert, Sara Beth Lowell, Brenna Tolbert, and Samuel Lowell; his great-grandchildren Madison Shell, Macy Shell, and Aaden Brown; his siblings Bill Tolbert, Annabelle Weaver, Alice Baldwin all of Pamplin, Virginia; Emmitt Tolbert Jr.of Lynchburg, Virginia. Ruth Woods of Appomattox County; Barbara Ann Calloway, Georgia May Stern of Lynchburg, Virginia; Homer Ray Tolbert of Amherst Virginia; Dan Tolbert of Silver Springs, Maryland; and James Tolbert, Victor, New York. Jack is predeceased by his beloved son Travis Dean Tolbert; his siblings Betty Jane Smith, Gracie Barksdale, Bobby Tolbert, Thomas Tolbert, Ivy George Tolbert and Homer Tolbert. To the man with the biggest heart, the most unforgettable presence, the man who adopted all his children and showed them unconditional love, the man who was our strength during the roughest times, and to the man who united us all as a family: words cannot express just how much you touched everyone. We each carry a piece of you with us. We love you and you are in our hearts forever. A funeral service for Mr. Tolbert will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 8, 2010 at Liberty Baptist Church with Pastor Doug Lowell and Evangelist Jason Camp officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg. Pallbearers will be Brian Ludwig, Ross Kerr, Bobby Brown, William Logan, James Woodward, Joe Gathercoal, Frank McFall, and Bill McFall. Honorary pallbearers will be Samuel Lowell, Sarah Lowell, Macy shell, Madison Shell, Jailyn Tolbert, Brenna Tolbert, and Aaden Brown. The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 7-9 pm, Flowers will be accepted or those who wish may make memorial contributions to God's Place, 200 Reliance Road, Middletown, VA 22645
