Mr. Harry Richard Applegate, age 90 a resident of Strasburg, Virginia passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Consulate Healthcare of Woodstock. He was born in Vinita, Oklahoma on December 28, 1918 a son of the late Claire McCurdy & Miriam Ramsey Applegate. He was the husband of the late Edna Vernelle Cousins Applegate. He was a former Merchant Marine having served in World War II. Mr. Applegate served as a former Mayor for the Town of Strasburg. He was very active in the community of Strasburg where he was involved with the Strasburg Museum, Strasburg Community Library, the local SPCA. He was a Master Mason and the Shenandoah American Legion Post #77 of Strasburg. In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by a son, Richard P. Applegate. Survivors include a son, Matt J. Applegate of Strasburg, VA; a daughter, Lucille Shaw of Houston, TX; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren A graveside service for Mr. Applegate will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 21, 2009 in Riverview Cemetery with Rev. David Howard officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Shenandoah American Legion Post # 77 of Strasburg. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to the Strasburg Community Library, 195 W.
