Obituary

Beloved wife, mother and oldest child of a family with deep Southern roots, Frances Ellyn Duggar Voss was born October 29, 1935 in Montgomery, Alabama to Llewellyn Goode Duggar and Freddie Rhodes Duggar, both of Auburn, AL. As a child, Ellyn traveled the world with her Air Force father, mother and treasured younger sister, Beverly, living in Florida, California, Ohio, Japan and Guam during World War II and post-war years during her father's postings as a bomber/transport pilot and airbase commander. Back in the United States, Ellyn attended Athens High School, skipping her senior year to attend the University of Georgia. A biology major, she graduated summa cum laude, third in her class in 1956. After working for the Georgia Public Health Service, Ellyn and Dan Voss were married November 17, 1956. The couple made their first home in Macon, Georgia where their eldest child, John Daniel Voss III, was born. Following a move to Vienna, Virginia in 1960, two daughters, Amy Elizabeth and Beverly Lynn, were born. Creative and whimsical, Ellyn drew on her natural sketching and sewing skills with ease. She experienced tremendous success as a doll maker during the early 1970s, selling out of her bespectacled "Mouse House" dolls at craft shows throughout the mid-Atlantic states. Cheerfully weathering heat, dust and crowds, she built on that early success, developing her own "soft sculpture" techniques to produce a series of elaborate, stuffed and painted dolls. During her ten-year career as a real estate secretary for Mount Vernon Reality, Ellyn also worked full time selling her Santas, mermaids and "Pretty Girl" dolls at the annual McLean Community Center Christmas craft show. Ellyn's dolls can be found in collections all over the world. When she wasn't making dolls or hosting the weekly quilting bee that met in her living room for more than 20 years, Ellyn was an inspired mother and devoted grandmother. Family gatherings on Patrick Street-whether after-dinner coffee on the deck or enchanting Christmas celebrations-counted among her happiest memories and her pot roast and peach cobbler recipes have passed into family legend. Dan and Ellyn moved to Woodstock, Virginia in 2006. After developing dementia, Ellyn spent her final years at Greenfield Senior Living of Woodstock attended by her husband and family until her passing on August 20, 2015. Ellyn is survived by Dan Voss, her husband of 59 years and their three children; John Daniel Voss, III, wife Regina O'Donnell and two granddaughters, Erin and Rachel Voss of Charlottesville, Virginia; oldest daughter Amy Voss-DeVito, husband Jeff DeVito and grandson Nicholas DeVito of Woodstock as well as youngest daughter Beverly Harrison and grandchildren Helen Harrison and Benjamin Harrison, also of Woodstock. Ellyn has one sister, Beverly Kadyk, of Palm Harbor, FL. A Celebration of Life service is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marching Falcons Uniform Fund. Checks may be made payable to Central High School (please make sure to reference "Band Uniforms" on the memo line) and mail to Central High School, 1147 Susan Avenue, Woodstock, VA 22664.
