Frances Smith Burcham died March 3, 2010 at the age of 88. She was a resident of Gafia Lodge Road, Middletown, VA. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, March 5, 2010 at Stover Memorial Chapel with Rev. David Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Panorama Memorial Gardens. She was born November 25, 1921 a daughter of the late John William and Hattie Florence Melton Smith. She was married to Brady Lawrence Burcham for 64 years. She was a member of the Strasburg Presbyterian Church. She was raised on a farm with lots of animals. She raised chickens, ducks, and rabbits herself. Frances was fond of sewing and making clothes for her family, curtains, and quilts. After raising her three children she worked at Aileen in Strasburg for twelve years, and then she became a caregiver for several ladies in her home. She cared for Bertha Cornell for 22 years. She loved working in her vegetable garden, canning, raising flowers, and grapes. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 for 36 years. She is survived by a daughter, Janet Burcham Sonner of Strasburg. She was also the mother of the late Larry Dale Burcham and Walter Byrd Burcham. She is survived by four grandchildren, Bill Sonner and wife, Darcy of Augusta, WV, Ann S. Contreras and husband, Arthur of Edinburg, VA, Esther S. Miller of Strasburg, and Jan Sonner Layne and husband, Chris of Middletown, VA, and seven great-grandchildren. She is survived by one brother, James Uthel Smith, Sr., and two sisters, Dorothy Smith Heishman, and Lytha May Smith Wymer all of Strasburg, VA, and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Smith of Martinsburg, WV. Pallbearers will be nephews of Frances, Wayne Miller, Doug Miller, Ronnie Stoneburner, Kenny Burcham, Larry Burcham, and James Uthel Smith, Jr. The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 6-8 PM Memorials may be made to Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Ladies Auxiliary. 157 E. Washington Street, Strasburg, VA 22657 or the American Cancer Society, 2654 Valley Ave, Suite B, Winchester, VA 22601, or a charity of ones choice.
