Obituary

Carey Malcom Mossburg of Strasburg, Virginia passed away on May 5, 2022 after a four-year battle with metastatic renal cell carcinoma.  Carey was born on October 20, 1959 in Cheverly, Maryland, the son of Gloria and Donald Mossburg [both deceased].  He is survived by Lorraine Mossburg (his high school sweetheart he married on October 4, 1980), as well as Matthew (son), Morgan (daughter-in-law), and Mason (grandson).  Other immediate family members (and spouses) are Tona (Marie), Donnie (Sheila), John [deceased] (Elizabeth), and Dale (Zoe).  His nieces, nephews and their spouses plus children include:  Vickie (Bryan), TJ (Jeff), Bobby, Zack, Josh, Leigha, Shannon (Brandon), Madison, Jeffrey [deceased] and Alex.  He is also survived by his wife’s siblings and their families, extended family including cousins, and many lifelong as well as recent friends.

Shortly after marrying, Carey and Lorraine moved to Bowie, MD where they lived for 25 years.  Carey loved sports and was a big fan of the area’s professional teams including the formerly-named Washington Redskins, Orioles, Capitals, DC United, and Washington Freedom.  He coached his son’s soccer team (the “Bowie Bolts”) for 10 years.  In 2007, Carey and Lorraine moved from Maryland to Toms Brook, Virginia into their own custom-designed log home with a spectacular view of the mountains (a lifelong dream of Carey’s).

Among his places of employment were Barbera Bakery (Cheverly MD) and Crown Bolt (based in Cerritos CA).  In 2001, he purchased C&K Delivery which was based out of Dulles Airport from his Uncle Sonny.  Thereafter, Carey successfully expanded his freight transportation company as well as gained many long-lasting friendships with business associates and clients.
Carey had a great love of family – celebrating birthdays, holidays, and watching sports together.  More recently, as his “Opa,” Carey enjoyed Mario video games, frisbee golf, Legos, chess, and a Disney cruise with his grandson Mason.

His second love was travelling (often with friends and family) and, over the years, Carey and Lorraine visited 24 States in the US and enjoyed beaches in Virginia, the Carolinas, Florida, Bermuda, and 10 islands in the Caribbean.

A celebration of Carey’s life will be held on Sunday, June 12 from 12 noon to 3 pm at Fox Meadow Barn @ Cloverdale Farm located at 350 Old Firehouse Lane in Winchester VA.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
