Bessie Simmons McGrady, age 89 of Strasburg, Virginia passed away Monday, December 15, 2014 at her home with her family by her side. Bessie was born August 8, 1925 in Sugar Grove, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Harry A. and Effie Mae Moats Simmons. She was a homemaker, mother and was employed at Aileen, Inc., of Strasburg until it's closing on December 30, 1980. She was a woman of deep faith and dedicated her later years to Strasburg United Methodist Church where she was a lifetime member and served in many positions. She loved singing in the choir, making and serving meals and visiting the sick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Eli McGrady; her brothers, Elmer Simmons, Ralph Simmons, Arlie Simmons, Claude Simmons; a sister, Helen Simmons Steed. Surviving are her son, Larry Bright and wife, Abby of Strasburg; her sisters, Virginia Simmons McEnerney and husband, Bill of Columbus, Ohio, Laura Simmons Carwell and husband, Harold of Staunton, Margaret "Sissy" Simmons Funk and husband, Kenneth of Woodstock; a brother, Tommy Simmons of Strasburg; her grandchildren, Kimberly Walker and husband, Joseph of Winchester, Trina George and husband, David of Woodstock, Clayton Embrey of Warrenton; a stepson, Lloyd McGrady and wife, Debbie of Navarre, Florida; step-daughters-in-law, Judy McGrady of Florence, Mississippi and Lydia McGrady of Clifton Forge; many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home, 177 N. Holliday St., Strasburg on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday at Strasburg United Methodist Church with Rev. John B. Haynes, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg followed by a meal at the church. Memorials may be made to Strasburg United Methodist Women, 114 W. Washington St., Strasburg, VA 22657 or Blue Ridge Hospice, Inc., 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601. Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg is in charge of arrangements.
