Bernard Griswold Obituary

Bernard Lee Griswold, 4/25/1942 – 7/23/2022

Bernard Lee Griswold of Woodstock, VA, passed away on Saturday July 23, 2022, after
a brief but fierce battle with leukemia.

A celebration of Bud’s life will be held at a future date.

He is survived by his wife Mary Gessner of Woodstock and daughter Susan Marie Griswold and son-in-law Kevin Dermond of Scappoose, OR.

Bernard, or as family and friends fondly knew him, Bud, Buddy, Budley, Griz, was born
in Hastings, MI on April 25, 1942, to Helen (Hogan), and Kenneth Griswold. The family
eventually settled in Durand, MI for the greater part of Bud’s upbringing. He was in the
starting line-up on Durand High School’s football, baseball and basketball teams. Upon
graduating in 1960 he received a baseball scholarship to Iowa State University where he
graduated with a B.S. in Fish Biology in 1964. That same year his daughter Susan was
born and shortly thereafter, moved to Orono, Maine where he completed his Masters
degree at the University of Maine in 1967. The family then relocated to St Paul,
Minnesota for Bud’s doctoral study and completion of his Ph.D at the University of
Minnesota in 1970. Bud went on to have a rich professional life as a fisheries scientist,
researcher and teacher, working for the National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service and the National Sea Grant College Program at NOAA,
Washington DC. Bud retired in 1995 but remained busy. After relocating to the
Shenandoah Valley, VA he became active in local natural resource issues and served on
the board of the Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River and the Shenandoah
County Water Resources Advisory Committee and Conservation Easement Authority. In
his retirement, Bud enjoyed traveling the world, scuba diving, fishing at his Canadian
cottage and hunting for morel mushrooms. Bud was one-of-a-kind. He was a steadfast,
loving and supportive father and husband; and his sharp intellect, guileless humor,
profound work ethic made him a joy and inspiration to many. He will be dearly missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the North Fork of
the Shenandoah River, P.O. Box 746, Woodstock, VA 22664; FNFSR.org
