Benjamin Franklin “Benny” Updyke 96, a lifelong resident of Strasburg, VA passed away Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Winchester Medical Center.
A funeral service for Mr. Updyke will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2023, at Stover Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dan Locke officiating. Mr. Updyke will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg, VA.
The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home on Friday one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Updyke was born in Strasburg, VA on December 10, 1926, a son of the late Roy Philip and Nell Spengler Richard Updyke. Mr. Updyke was a World War II veteran having served with the U.S. Navy and a Korean War veteran having served with the U.S. Army. He worked as a plumber with Funk & Crabil and worked for the Kinloch Farm in The Plains, Virginia. Mr. Updyke was a member of the Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg, VA, the Strasburg Moose Lodge #403, and the V.F.W. Post #2447 in Edinburg, VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Jane Shacklett Updyke; two brothers Harold Richard Updyke and Philip Wayno Updyke, and a stepson Larry Dyke.
Survivors include his daughter Terry Cook of Strasburg, VA; one granddaughter Dena Cook; two great-grandchildren Shiann and Clint; his sister, Sandra Updyke Bergey along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pallbearers will be members of the Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg, VA.
