Albert "Jay" Johnson

Albert J. “Jay” Johnson 1931-2023 of Toms Brook, VA passed away on Sunday, August 13, 2023, at The Maynard Assisted Living in Strasburg, VA.

Mr. Johnson was born and raised in Washington County, Abingdon, VA, a son of the late Joseph H. and Rose E. Gobble Johnson of Abingdon, VA.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers Harry, L.C., and Charles; four sisters Trelma Johnson Hayter, Eileen Johnson Toon, Dortheda Johnson Price and Jean Johnson Gehlken along with his lifelong companion Helen McKenzie.   

Surviving is his youngest brother David Wayne Johnson (Elaine) and many nieces and nephews. 

He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1952 until 1954.  He was deployed to the Marshall Islands during the U.S. Atomic testing era.  He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Merrifield, VA as an Electro-Mechanical Technician.

Jay loved boating and fishing.  He and Helen spent many weekends and vacations at Sandy Point, VA on the lower Potomac River where he kept his boat.  Jay also loved dogs.  His last dog was a five-year-old female Shih Tzu named Little Girl who was always by his side.

Jay will be returned to Abingdon, VA and laid to rest at a graveside service conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 18, 2023, at Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Larry Lust officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions in memory of Jay to a charity of your choice.
