Obituary

Shirley May Morrissey was a beautiful woman in all ways. Passing away on

September 30, 2025, she is missed terribly by her four children, their partners and a

loving collection of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Shirely was 95,

vibrant, full of life and friendships. She lost her husband, Edwin, only two years

ago, just six months shy of their 75th wedding anniversary. One of the beautiful

aspects of her character was their enduring marriage; it provided the ideal model

the children learned to live by. Ed, and their collection of descendants, were

Shirley's focus in life. She was full of fun, good counsel and always there as a

mom.

Shirley lived in Strasburg, VA, where she passed away at home surrounded by

family. Services for Shirley will be conducted privately. She was born on May 23,

1930, in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Laura Janning and Ransom Sewell. As the

children arrived, Shirley worked in local school systems and charitable

organizations where her administrative and managerial talents developed. She

used these skills throughout her married life and in raising a family. Through work

and neighbors, Shirley made friends everywhere – another of her beautiful

characteristics. People responded to her wherever she went.

The family moved several times, from St Louis to Charlottesville, VA, Ridgewood,

NJ and Vienna, VA. As empty nesters and in retirement, Shirley and Ed moved to

Isle of Wight, VA, and Woodbridge, VA, ultimately settling in Strasburg, VA.

Shirley is survived by her children, Christine Mann (Bob, d), Nancy Kelbaugh

(Paul, d), Dee Morrissey (Dan Kitzmiller), Dan Morrissey (Terri); her grandchildren,

Courtney White, Katie Rice, Sean Morrissey, Bryan Harden, Sam Kelbaugh,

Brendan Morrissey, and Hayley Morrissey; and her great-grandchildren, Rachel

Downie, Graham White, Finn Kelbaugh, Avanelle Morrissey, Olivia Kelbaugh and

Palmer Harden. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents and by her

granddaughter Christa Kelbaugh.

With a passion for family and a love for life, Shirley made an exceedingly

comfortable home for her family. She traveled extensively with family and as a

couple with Ed. Making friends everywhere they went, Shirley and Ed were

always socially active. Her firm but loving hand gave her family a foundation on

which to grow and her lifelong love with Ed provided a goal for all that followed

her. We were fortunate to have such a beautiful person in our world.
