IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shelby Jordan
Coons
August 19, 1965 – January 30, 2025
Shelby Jordan Coons, 59, of Front Royal, Virginia, met her Savior, Jesus Christ, face to face on January 30, 2025, at her home while surrounded by her family. For some this might come as a surprise as she had been quietly battling numerous health issues for many years. Despite it all, she kept a smile on her face and a positive attitude.
Shelby was born to the late Robert Lee Jordan and Celia Diane Jordan on August 19, 1965, in Alexandria, Virginia. Shelby graduated from Strasburg high school in 1983 where she was a good student and a great athlete. She held the school record for the half mile for eight years and was also nominated Most Athletic by her classmates. She went to Virginia Tech and graduated in 1987 with a degree in education and obtained her master's degree in 1992 from Shenandoah University specializing in reading. She started her teaching career in August of 1987 and had a career in elementary and middle school education as a teacher and administrator for 30 years.
Throughout her life, Shelby was active in either Strasburg United Methodist Church or Mount Olive United Methodist Church. She particularly enjoyed working with children and serving the Lord in multiple capacities.
Shelby was a lifelong learner. She taught herself to quilt, crochet, decorate sugar cookies, and to operate a small business along with a few other things. She won multiple ribbons at both the Shenandoah County and Warren county fairs with her self taught creations.
Shelby retired after 30 years to be the caretaker for her parents. While doing this, she started her sugar cookie decorating business, Simply Shenandoah Sweets, and also ran for and was elected to the Shenandoah County school board for District 5. She felt this was a great way to continue to give back to the children and teachers of Shenandoah county.
She is survived by her husband Greg; her sister Kimberly Jordan; her nephew, Corey Wills (Danielle); and her bonus children Jamie Hamrick (David); Scott Kline (Jen); Trent Coons; and Hannah Coons as well as a great niece, Lilah Wills, and bonus grandchildren.
Shelby would like to give special thanks to Dr. Nick Gemma and Dr. Michael McCusker, along with her chemotherapy nurse Nicki Judy for their kind and compassionate care.
A celebration of life service for Shelby will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Mount Olive United Methodist Church in Toms Brook, Virginia with Rev. David Nesselrodt and Rev. Sonya Williams-Giersch officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the service. Attendees are invited to stay for a meal following the celebration of life. Please come as you are.
In lieu of flowers, Shelby would have appreciated one or both of the following. Shelby believed in helping others and suggests memorial contributions be made to Hope's Angels Fund, 400 Campus Blvd., Suite 100, Winchester, VA 22601. Contributions will go directly to cancer patients in the Shenandoah Valley to help cover their financial needs while fighting cancer. You may also take the gift of uninterrupted time and share a meal or activity with someone who is important to you.
You may submit condolences directly to the family at www.stoverfuneralhome.com.
