Orville Levi (Buddy) Painter, age 87, of 13724 Back Rd., Strasburg, died Thursday, February 3, 2011 at Greenfield Assisted Living in Strasburg, VA where he had been a resident since July of 2009. Buddy was born August 7, 1923 in the Hamburg area of Shenandoah County, VA, son of Clayton Arnold and Mae Irene Coffman Painter. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Lorraine Huffman Painter and two children, Vickie P. Stickley and husband, Gary and Randall L. Painter and wife, Kimberly, all of Strasburg. Four grandchildren, Gregory "Scott" Orndorff and wife Donna of Toms Brook, Erica D. Painter, of Bay St. Louis, MS, Katherine (Katie) L. Painter of Stephens City, VA and Clayton N. Painter of Henrico, VA. He is also survived by a sister, Charlotte P. Poland, of Edinburg, VA and one niece, Sherry P. Strosnider of Winchester, VA and one nephew, Rick Poland of New Market, VA. A 1940 graduate of Triplett High School in Mt. Jackson, he attended Shenandoah College & Conservatory of Music located in Dayton, VA. Buddy was a Navy veteran of World War II serving on the U.S.S. Osterhaus, a navy destroyer escort ship operating in the Pacific Ocean. He was a past member of the Strasburg Jaycees, past member of Shenandoah County Fair Association Board of Directors, past president of the Shenandoah County Auto Dealers Association, past member of the Community Advisory Board for Marathon Bank, now United Bank. Buddy owned and conducted his own orchestra/band named "Buddy Painter and His Orchestra." He and his band members performed throughout the Shenandoah Valley and particularly at "The Spot", a nightclub located in the Mt. Jackson area during the late 40's and the early 50's. He had a true love for music and especially the Big Band sound of the era. He owned and operated Massanutten Motors Inc. as a Dodge and Plymouth dealer in Strasburg from 1955 until 1970. Massanutten Motors then continued as a used car dealership from 1971 until 1981 in Strasburg. The business was then moved to his residence located on Back Road. He also owned and operated Lee-Rae Farms, a beef cattle farm, until his death. He loved his cows and was an avid hunter and boater. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, February 7th, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Strasburg with Sonya Williams Giersch, Associate in Ministry and Rev. William H. Hall, III officiating. Burial will follow immediately at the St. Stephens Lutheran Church Cemetery on Back Road. Pallbearers will be Clayton Painter, Ron Roller, Billy Henry, Bill Craun, Sherwin Tharpe and Ralph Stickley. The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg on Sunday, February 6th from 4 pm to 6 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Building Fund, 193 W. Washington St., Strasburg, VA 22657 Arrangements are being handled by Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, VA.
