Matt J.
Applegate
Nov 11, 1950 — Oct 13, 2026

12:00 - 3:00 pm (Eastern time)
Matt J. Applegate, age 75, departed this world on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, holding his daughter’s hand.
Matt proudly hailed from Vinita, Oklahoma. Together with his parents and brother, the family relocated to Arlington, Virginia, in the mid-1950s where he later graduated from Washington-Lee High School in 1968. Following his schooling, Matt embarked on many professional endeavors over the years including being a courier for local news corporations, a long stretch of time in construction- specifically commercial roofing, and throughout his life, several entrepreneurial endeavors including a leather shop and a water truck business. Never one to settle for ordinary, he consistently looked ahead to the next opportunity.
Matt had a special appreciation for vehicles, with a particular fondness for Corvettes, Mercedes-Benz and Indian Motorcycles. You could never be too sure of what his latest endeavor or vehicle was, but you could always count on a good story about it! Above all else, he was most proud of being a father to Katie and Pawpaw to William, Curtis and Lucas, who will each carry his legacy forward.
Matt is survived by his only child, daughter Katie Marie (Applegate) Early; three grandsons, William, Curtis, and Lucas; his former wife Sharon, who remained a valued part of his life; his former stepchildren, Faith and Jason, who also remained part of his life’s story; along with several generations of nephews, nieces, and cousins. Matt was preceded in death by his father Harry R. Applegate, his mother Edna C. Applegate, his brother, Richard Applegate, and his half-sister Lucille Shaw.
The family will host a celebration of life memorial service on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at The Black Twig in Sperryville, VA from 12-3:00pm. A private interment is being planned for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please send Corvettes to honor Matt.. or consider a memorial contribution to the Blue Ridge Care Fund.
