Mary Agnes "Polly" Benson (née Quinlan) of Strasburg, VA, died unexpectedly in her home in Strasburg on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. A memorial service for Mrs. Benson will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at the Strasburg, Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Howard officiating. A reception of food and fellowship will immediately follow the service in church fellowship hall. Mrs. Benson will be laid to rest privately at Riverview Cemetery. Known from an early age as "Polly", she was born on January 15, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to David and Valerie (Emmala) Quinlan. She studied music and dance from an early age, and played both the piano and harp. She became a member of the Pittsburgh Civic Ballet in her mid-teens and performed as a soloist ballerina on many occasions. Later, she worked at the US Justice Department and eventually retired in 1992 as secretary to Judge Archer in the US Circuit Court of Appeals. She was a regular volunteer to many community organizations in her life, including the Girl Scouts of America, the Eastmont Women's Club, the Strasburg Library, Belle Grove Museum and the Compassion Cupboard Food bank. She enjoyed the outdoors and spent time annually traveling to, camping and canoeing in federal and state parks. She was a member, elder and treasurer of the Strasburg Presbyterian Church. She was known for her dedicated and intricate cross-stitching and loved crossword puzzles. She was married to John M. Longo (deceased) and Charles Herbert Benson (deceased). She is survived by her children Valerie Kelly of Middleburg, VA (husband Bob), John Longo of Toronto, ONT, CA (wife Jennifer), and Paula French of Napa, CA (husband Peter). Her son Richard Longo of Junction, WV preceded her in death. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; a brother David Quinlan of Pittsburgh PA, two nephews and a niece, and many cousins. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Strasburg Presbyterian Church, 325 S. Holliday Street, Strasburg, VA 22657.
