John Forrest
Mahorney
April 7, 1936 – January 3, 2016
John Forrest Mahorney, Strasburg, VA, passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2016, at Greenfield Reflection of Strasburg. He is survived by his beloved wife Patricia (LuLu), son Steven, brother Lawrence, nephews, niece, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and cousins. He was predeceased in death by his parents Elizabeth and John R. Mahorney, brother Edward Mahorney and sister Ciss Masters. Upon retiring from the Arlington Co. Fire Department as a Station Commander in 1986, John realized his dream, and he and LuLu moved to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, a place they had visited and loved for many years. John loved his family, his dogs, his friends, Bluegrass music, antique clocks, and steam engine trains. As a member of the National Railway Historical Society, he and Pat enjoyed many trips. He was a funny, outgoing man, and nothing brought him greater joy than to bring a smile to someone's face, particularly a child's. He was kind and generous and a tireless worker, proficient in everything he tackled, from building a cabin to rewiring a home to house painting like a pro. He never knew the meaning of the word "bored". Alzheimer's has no mercy on its victims. John did not choose to forget your name, to speak to you in garbled sentences, to act without discretion, to become isolated while hoping to see or hear from an old friend. To those of you who remembered him during this agonizing journey, Steven and I truly thank you. Dr. Rajesh Subedi of Front Royal, who treated John with such understanding, gentleness and dignity. Dr. Beth Cardwell, Woodstock, who took the time to comfort me. The employees of Food Lion and Rite Aid, Strasburg, who became our second families, always welcoming us with smiles and kindness. And to those who took care of him with love the past two months at Greenfield, including the staff of Blue Ridge Hospice and my special angel, Steven and I thank you. It was John's wish that there be no funeral nor memorial service and his ashes scattered in the spring in a place chosen by him.
