James Robert Carper, age 77, of Middletown passed away Thursday, October 3, 2013 at his home in Middletown. A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 8th in the Stover Memorial Chapel, Strasburg with Rev. Dennis Carper officiating. Burial will be in Reliance Cemetery with military honors by Shenandoah American Legion Post No. 77, Strasburg. Mr. Carper was born April 29, 1936 in Middletown, a son of the late Norman Edgar and Montrue Virginia Orndorff Carper. He was retired from Winchester Medical Center, was a member of Meadow Mills Church Of The Brethren and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a member of Shenandoah American Legion, Post 77, Strasburg, Strasburg Moose Lodge No. 403 and Fraternal Order of Eagles, Strasburg. He loved baseball, having coached little and senior leagues, American League team, Strasburg, started Apple Valley League in Winchester and coached a Boys Club team in Maryland. Surviving are his sons; Greg A. Carper and wife, Teresa of Bunker Hill, WV and Derek J. Carper of Middletown; three grandchildren, Reid M. Carper, Taylor D. Carper and Alexis M. Carper; three sisters, Esther Cole of Gainsboro, Rachel Seal of Stephens City and Sharon Daily of Middletown; four brothers, Joe Carper of Middletown, Dan Carper of Blacksburg, Randy Carper of South Williamsport, MD and Dennie Carper of Winchester. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Carper. Also surviving are his former wife, Carolene Jenkins Carper.
