Herbert Marshall Nickens 81 of Bunker Hill, WV and formerly of Strasburg, VA left this world and entered eternal peace on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.
A celebration of life and homegoing service for Mr. Nickens will be held at Stover Funeral Home in Strasburg, VA on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Mr. Nickens will be laid to rest at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Strasburg, VA. The repast gathering will be held immediately following the internment at the Strasburg United Methodist Church.
Mr. Nickens was born on March 19, 1941, at the Nickens' residence on what used to be "B Street" in Strasburg, VA, a son of the late Charles Earnest and Susie Love (Travis) Nickens. He was the 10th child of 10 children. He joined as member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church as a child and attended Sunset Hill School through middle school ages and graduated from Douglas High School in 1959. Mr. Nickens was a 1964 graduate of Virginia State College where he served as the Student Council President.
Mr. Nickens moved to New York City in early 1970's and worked briefly at Colgate/Palmolive Inc. prior to beginning his government career with the IRS in 1974 and took a position with NASA shortly after. It was in April of 1974 that Mr. Nickens married Beverly June Nickens and became a family with her children Virgil, Stephen, and Jerri in Gaithersburg, MD. In May of 1977 they gave birth to their son Travis. During Mr. Nickens career with NASA he also worked job assignments with IBM and AT&T. He lived in Maryland until 1996 when he moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida where he worked at the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral until his retirement in 2002. Mr. Nickens moved to Washington, DC in 2003 to help care for his sister Selma and then to Martinsburg, WV in 2005 to be with wife Beverly and help her with the care of his mother-in-law, Wardry Weaver. Mr. Nickens moved to Front Royal, VA to assist in caring for his cousin Reginald (Reggie) Thomas Travis until his death in 2012. He continued to live in Front Royal until 2018 when he moved in with his son Travis (Trey) and his family until his death. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Beverly June Nickens in 2010; his son Virgil Stamps in 2010; his siblings Selma Hill - 2011, Charles Nickens Jr. - 1993, Lewis Nickens - 2001, George Irvin Nickens - 2006, Willard Nickens – 1953; his nephew Gregory Hill in 2010.
Survivors include his son Travis (Trey) Nickens and wife Amber; his daughter Jear'don Taylor; son Stephen Stamps; his grandchildren Xavier Nickens, Tristan Nickens, Janessa Nickens, Natasha Hope, Desire Ford, Ciera Ford, Dominque Ford, Pau'Anthony Stamps, and Stephen Stamps Jr.; his siblings Nina Nickens, James Nickens, Walter Nickens, and Joseph Nickens; his nephews Gerald Nickens, Glen Nickens, Joseph Nickens Jr., Guyler Hill, and Grandison Hill.
