Obituary

Galen Adam Funkhouser, 93, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2025, at his home in Strasburg, Virginia.

Galen was born in Fishers Hill, VA on September 26, 1931, a son of the late Fred J. and Sarah Keckley Funkhouser.  He was married to the late Ruth Louise Day Funkhouser, the love of his life for over 60 years and they consistently modeled love, companionship and faithfulness. One was rarely seen without the other.  He was the owner and operator of Galen Funkhouser's Heating and Cooling since 1962.  In that role he not only supported the community with physical warmth but the warmth of true understanding, compassion and friendship.  He was a member of the Columbia Furnace Church where he and his wife served the Lord as deacons and youth ministers for many years. Galen was a man of great faith. He walked the walk every day of his life and was a shining example of a life lived serving the Lord. He enjoyed simple pleasures like singing old hymns, eating peanut brittle, and watching birds from his porch, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Louise Day Funkhouser, October 30, 2011, and his sister Betty Fry, June 29, 2021.

Survivors include his sons, Ronnie Funkhouser (Jackie), Daryl Funkhouser (Debbie) both of Toms Brook, VA; Ricky Funkhouser (Beverly), Christopher Funkhouser (Katrina) both of Strasburg, VA; his daughter Sharon Racey (Jeff) of Toms Brook, VA; 22 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; his siblings Alvin Funkhouser (Millie) of Strasburg, VA and Peggy Bauserman (Donald) of Toms Brook, VA along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service for Mr. Funkhouser will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 13, 2025, at Columbia Furnace Church, 20910 Senedo Road, Edinburg, Virginia 22824 with Pastor Ricky Funkhouser and Pastor Beverly Funkhouser officiating.  Burial will follow in Columbia Furnace Union Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the church on Monday one hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers will Daryl Funkhouser Jr., Kirkland Funkhouser, Isaac Funkhouser, Jett Funkhouser, Joseph Racey, Anthony Moore, and Jesse Funkhouser.
