Obituary

Betty Grant, 94, of Strasburg, VA, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026, with her daughters by her side. She was born in Fisher’s Hill, Virginia, on January 3, 1932, to Laura (Boehm) and Alpha Hottel.

Betty Lou was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was a faithful member of Toms Brook United Methodist Church and retired from the Shenandoah County School system nearly 30 years ago.

In her early years, she played on the Toms Brook women’s basketball team and later worked as a telephone operator for Farmers Mutual Telephone System (now Shentel) in Toms Brook, Virginia. During this time, she met the love of her life, Donnie Grant, and together they built a life rooted in farming on Sandy Hook Farm alongside Sam and Irene Stickley. Betty embraced the farming lifestyle wholeheartedly and supported it with unwavering dedication. She had a deep appreciation for the performing arts, especially musical performances.

Betty’s presence touched many lives. She will be remembered for her quiet strength, generosity, home-cooked meals, and her warm sense of humor.

She is survived by her loving daughters, their families and close friends: Laura (Richard) Pence, Karen (Darrell) Derflinger, and Sheila (Jeff) Erhardt. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Grant Derflinger and his children, Aiden and Camden; Nicholas (Erin) Pence and their children, Brynn and Elise; Abbi (Henry) Cohen and their child, Ellie; and Emma and Grace Erhardt.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald Stuart “Fuzzy” Grant, as well as her siblings: Katherine Sullivan, Clyde Hottel, Alpha “Jr.” Hottel, Ellis Hottel, and Wayne Hottel.

The family would like to offer special thanks to her loving neighbors, Denny (Pam) Neff, and longtime caregivers Patty Sheetz, Jeanette Day, and Sharon Martin for their unwavering companionship and devoted care.

Family night will be held on Monday, April 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Stover Funeral Home.

A graveside service for Mrs. Grant will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Riverview Cemetery with Pastor Bobby Funkhouser officiating, followed by a celebration of life. Family and friends are invited to attend and honor Betty’s life.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to Blue Ridge Care, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601 or Strasburg Vol. Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 620, Strasburg, VA22657 in her memory.

Betty’s legacy of quiet love and steadfast support will live on in all who knew her.
