Obituary

Anne Elizabeth Phalen Barr, 93, of Strasburg, VA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Greenfield Senior Living of Strasburg surrounded by her loving family.

A funeral service for Mrs. Barr will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Stover Funeral Home with Rev John D. Haynes, Jr. officiating.  Anne will be laid to rest by her late husband in Riverview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday one hour prior to the service.

Anne was born on December 1, 1929, in Winchester, VA, daughter of the late Robert Francis and the late Martha Chandler Phalen.  Eleven years his senior, Anne had a special bond with her brother, the late Robert C. (Bo) Phalen.    A life-long Strasburg resident, Anne graduated from Strasburg High School, attended Mary Washington College, graduated from the Winchester Business School and was employed by the Northern Virginia Daily.  She was the wife of the late Harold R. (Bud) Barr of fifty-two years until his death in 2005.  Anne was a faithful and an active member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church for seventy years.  She is best remembered for her welcoming nature. Anne loved having visits with family and friends in her home to enjoy her great cooking, good conversation and play games.  She graciously served as a caregiver to many family members. Anne and Bud took a retirement cross-country road trip, visiting longtime friends along the way, but they could not wait to return home to the mountain views of the Valley.

Anne is survived by her three children, Reid Barr, Betty Colson (Howard), and Jennifer Maggio (Eric); grandchildren: Brian Colson (Kolynn), Andrew Colson (Paula), Mark Colson (Sara), Quinlan, Anya, Isabella and Anthony Maggio; nieces: Mary V. Painter (James), Ellen V. Davis (William); and numerous great and great-great nephews and nieces.

The family would like to offer special thanks to her caregivers, Sally Johnson, Christine Morikawa, Evine Eriksson, the staff of Greenfield Senior Living of Strasburg, Blue Ridge Hospice and all those who blessed her with cards, calls, and visits throughout the years.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St. Winchester, VA 22601, or Strasburg United Methodist Church, 114 W. Washington St., Strasburg, VA  22657.
