Orville Deming, Jr. Obituary

Orville Merrell Deming, 91, of Middletown, VA, passed away April 25, 2024, at Winchester Medical Center.

Orville was born in San Antonio, TX, on December 18, 1932, the eldest child and only son of the late Orville M. Sr. and Linda B. M. Ristow Deming.

Orville graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in February 1956. He was drafted by the U.S. Army in September 1956 and spent 2 years in Germany during the Cold War. He returned home to Maryland in 1958 where he worked as an industrial arts/math/technology education teacher in Prince George’s County Public Schools from 1956 to 1990. He was a firm believer in the importance of education and was a lifelong teacher both in and outside of the classroom. He later completed two master’s degrees in education in 1967 and 1977.

Orville was passionate about his family and his home. He married the love of his life, Ann Marie Reed on August 18, 1956, and in 1967 they purchased property in Middletown, VA. They built a cabin on the property, followed by a house which became their home. The house and the cabin have been a part of countless memories and celebrations; they were labors of love and will be lasting legacies for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Orville is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Ann Deming; his two children, Dwight Deming, and Linda Marshall; his daughter-in-law Deborah Deming; his son-in-law Steve Marshall; his two sisters Marie Edwards and Dorothy Bower; his six grandchildren, Megan Richardson, Stephanie McKay, Andrew Woodard, Christopher Marshall, Jeremy Marshall, and Jonathan Deming; and six great-grandchildren, Desmond and Ava McKay, Cadence and Corinne Richardson, and Grace and Mia Marshall.

A funeral service for Mr. Deming will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Lebanon Lutheran Church in Lebanon, VA.  Mr. Deming will be laid to rest privately.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
