Stephen Joseph Balanda

Stephen Joseph Balanda, age 75, of Strasburg, passed away Saturday, September 8, 2012, at his home after a brief illness. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 14, at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg with Father Joseph Edgington officiating. A private burial service will be conducted at Panorama Memorial Gardens, Warren County, following the funeral service. Mr. Balanda was born August 29, 1937 in Johnson City, New York, a son of the late Andrew and Mary Lonchisin Balanda. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Orthodox Church, Waldorf, Maryland and was also a member of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Winchester. He was a parishioner at Saint Thomas in the early days until eight years ago when he and Beverly retired to Strasburg, Virginia. He was responsible for, and devoted to, the St. Thomas Library for many years and for a time led a weekday Bible and Book study for parish retirees and painted an Icon. He was also a member of the Senior Hiking Club, active in the Winchester Fitness Club, a devout Detroit Tigers fan, and member of the Mayo Smith Society. Mr. Balanda received a Masters Degree from Ohio University and a second Masters Degree from Catholic University of America. He loved to travel and had been to Russia two times and last year visited the Holy Land. Steve was an avid reader, particularly of religion, history and philosophy. He was a Librarian/Information Specialist at American University, Prince George's Community College and retired from the Army Corp of Engineers. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Beverly Jean Mandichak Balanda; his daughter, Laurel M. Balanda of Baltimore, Maryland; two brothers, Michael Balanda and wife Rita of Vestal, New York and Robert Balanda of Johnson City, New York; his sister, Maryann Balanda of Endicott, New York; his sister-in-law, Patricia Devine of Endicott, New York; two nephews, four nieces, five great-nephews and two great-nieces. Pallbearers will be Michael Devine, Ryan Devine, Jacob Devine, Michael Balanda, Terrence McCurley and Leif Johnson. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to St. Thomas the Apostle Orthodox Church, 4419 Leonardtown Road, Waldorf, Maryland 20601. Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg is in charge of the arrangements.
